Seaweed Stories Video (Featuring Professor Jang-Gyun Kim)
– International Spotlight on Seaweed Breeding and Aquaculture Technology for Climate Change Response –
Incheon National University (President Lee In-Jae) announced that the research conducted by Professor Jang-Gyun Kim’s team from the Department of Oceanography on seaweed aquaculture and breeding has been featured as Korea’s representative case in the global environmental documentary Seaweed Stories.
Seaweed Stories is a documentary that highlights how nature-based solutions using seaweed can address interconnected environmental crises such as climate change, marine ecosystem collapse, and plastic pollution through vivid case studies from around the world. Hollywood actor Forest Whitaker served as narrator, with Jake Sumner directing and producing the film. The project was planned by Lonely Whale and co-produced in collaboration with Re:wild.
The documentary introduces the research by Professor Kim’s team with the phrase, “A scientist in Korea is developing seaweed varieties that can respond to a changing climate,” featuring their work on selecting and breeding climate-resilient seaweed species and developing cultivation techniques to stably grow them—framing these efforts as a key strategy in combating the climate crisis.
Professor Kim stated, “Seaweed aquaculture is a future industry that simultaneously addresses food, energy, and carbon neutrality,” adding, “It is highly meaningful that Korean seaweed research has gained international attention through this documentary.”
Seaweed Stories is currently being streamed exclusively on Leonardo DiCaprio’s YouTube channel and has also been selected as an in-flight screening program by Alaska Airlines and Hawaiian Airlines. The film is additionally available for community and corporate screenings through the Kinema platform.
